Overview & Purpose

In accordance with the Final Rule of the Federal Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 and the Virginia Administrative Code: 8VAC20-740, Norton City Schools presents the 2017-2020 Triennial Assessment which includes the timeframe from 2020 – 2021 school year. The Triennial Assessment indicates updates on the progress and implementation of Norton City Schools Wellness Policy and wellness initiatives, and provides required documentation of actions, steps, and information as outlined in the Final Rule. The school(s) included in this Triennial Assessment are:

Wellness Policy

The Norton City Schools Wellness Policy can be found at https://www.nortoncityschools.org/. Norton City Schools updates and/or modifies the Wellness Policy as appropriate. The policy is made available to the public through Norton City Schools website.

School Wellness Committee

Norton City Schools established a Wellness Policy leadership of one or more school officials who has the authority and responsibility to ensure each school complies with the Wellness Policy. The Wellness Policy committee meets at least 3 times per year for periodic review and update of the Wellness Policy. The general public and the school community are allowed and encouraged to participate in the Wellness Policy process.. A committee has been formed that includes: parents, students, community members, representatives of the School Food Authority, teachers, school health professionals, School Board members and school administrators. The Wellness Committee welcomes any community member who would like to be part of the committee. If interested, please contact the school board office at 540-679-2330.

Wellness Policy Compliance

Norton City Schools must conduct an assessment of the Wellness Policy every three years, at a minimum. The final rule requires State Agencies to assess compliance with the Wellness Policy requirements as a part of the general areas of the Administrative Review every three years.

We follow Norton City School’s policy on exempt fundraisers as outlined in our Division’s Wellness Policy. Fundraising during and outside school hours will sell only non-food items or foods and beverages that meet or exceed the Smart Snacks nutrition standards. These fundraisers may include but are not limited to, donation nights at restaurants, cookie dough, candy and pizza sales, market days, etc.

If a school decides to sell a food or beverage that does not meet the Smart Snack nutrition standards, then the fundraising item must be picked up after school by a parent. This will prevent the distribution of the fundraising item during the school day (which violates the wellness policy) and allows the parent to make decisions on the allocation of the product and nutritional needs for their child.

Thoroughly reviewed by USDA Food and Nutrition Service, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s model policy template is in compliance with the requirements set forth in the final rule.

Progress towards Goals

Norton City Schools recognizes the importance of health and wellbeing for students’ academic and future success in addition to the staff. In supporting the whole child and meeting the needs of staff, we are initiating the following goals

Ongoing – Promote “vegetables first” in cafeteria line, Rev Your Bev Program which encourages the benefits of children making the choice to drink more water.
