On Monday evening, June 4, 1962, at eight
o’clock, 56 seniors walked across the John I. Burton High School
stage to receive their diplomas presented by Mr. W.T. Bowen.
After listening to speeches by Salutatorian, Linda Connell and
Valedictorian, Nancy Wolfe, the class walked out to Mendelssohn’s
“War March of Priests” performed by Frank Glass, Jr., organist,
and Linda Hunt, pianist.
This June marks the fiftieth anniversary of
that graduation. A committee of those graduates, Robert Collier,
Bill Culbertson, Carol Morgan Hart, C.D. Hunt, and Stan Wilson, is
planning a reunion for classmates to renew friendships, to share
stories, and to catch up on what has happened in that 50-year
span. The reunion will be held in Norton on June 14-16 and will
coincide with the city’s “Best Friends Festival.” Saturday
evening, June 16, the reunion will end with a banquet for alumni
and guests at Tavern on the Main in Wise.

Several classmates have
not been contacted. Anyone with information regarding Janice
Addington Strong, Betty Jean Anderson DeLisi, Linda Rose Connell
Hall, Elizabeth Sue Dykes, Billie Ann Hughes, Stewart Henry
Judkins, Mary Jane Marcum, and Dorothy Norton, please email the
information to Bill Culbertson at
billbil@bellsouth.net.
By May 20, the committee
will provide reunion details to all who have indicated they will
attend.
