Norton City Public Schools Goals and Accomplishments


GOALS 2008-2009

  • Schools will be fully accredited and will make adequate yearly progress.

  • School division will create a division-wide plan of accreditation to help improve schools on an annual basis.

  • Expand course offerings through partnerships with Elite Learning and The Linwood Holton Governor’s School.

  • Continue to expand on-line testing at Norton Elementary School.

  • Mathematics and science will be a point of emphasis within the curriculum.   A special emphasis will be placed on science lab experience for students.

  • Continue to increase the awareness of the post-secondary educational and occupational opportunities.

  • Educational and instructional funds will be allocated to meet the needs of any school improvement initiatives.

  • Continue to improve communication with stakeholders of Norton City Schools.

  • Improve participation in the AIMS Scholar Program which provides educational opportunities for our graduates.

  • Adopt and purchase new textbooks or materials in English (8-12) and Math (Saxon K-7).

  • Provide a viable plan for graduating students who enter John I. Burton High School in the ninth grade.

  • Provide intervention and instruction to curb bullying at the 3-7 grade levels.

  • Continue to increase inclusion of special needs students in the regular classroom.

  • Enhance classroom instruction through the use of technology by providing hardware, software, and professional development opportunities.

  • Continue improving communication with stakeholders through the Norton City Schools webpage.

  • Advisee/Advisor Program for 8th grade students.

  • Fully implement the standards for professional evaluation.

  • Addition of recovery class for 8th grade English.

  • Expand Summer Project Graduation to include mathematics, English, social studies, and science classes.

  • Provide professional development to address different teaching styles at John I. Burton High School.

  • Expand Kuder Career System.

  • Complete renovation of Lawson-Fitchko Stadium.

  • Improve student/teacher ratio and courses offered in mathematics at John I. Burton High School by hiring an additional math teacher.

  • Add French & Physics classes to curriculum at John I. Burton High School.

  • Increase the number of electives in social studies at John I. Burton High School.

  • Completion of the Rickie M. Harris Athletic Complex.

  • Improve existing bus routes to maximize fuel efficiency.

  • Development of athletic handbook.

  • Increase the services offered by the science lab at Norton Elementary School.

  • Implement school wide incentive program to curb discipline problems in grades 4-7 thru recognition of achievement during scheduled assembly each six weeks.

  • Provide continued growth in history through grant for American History which will include staff development and training of teachers.

  • Full implementation of RTI (Response to Intervention) at Norton Elementary School.

  • Address gaps in mathematics by looking at alternate ways to remediate students at Norton Elementary School.

  • Implement Energy Savings.

  • Continue renovation to Norton Elementary and Middle School.
     

ACHIEVEMENTS 2007-2008

    √  Achieved full state accreditation for all Norton City Schools.
  √  Schools provided training opportunities that exceeded Standard of Learning requirements.
  √  Emphasized safety in our schools with new intervention methods.
  √  Awarded six academic scholarships to the Class of 2008.
  √  Instituted advisory committees which included parents, students and teachers.
  √  Increased the number of students enrolled in the Career & Technical Education Program.
  √  Expanded the use of technology by our classroom teachers by providing training with college credit.
  √  Expanded on-line testing opportunities with the division.
  √  Increased awareness to all graduates of post-secondary educational and occupational opportunities.
  √  Improved communication from the school level to all stakeholders in education.
  √  Completed budget process which provided salary improvement for all employees.
  √  Developed a five-year plan for capital improvement projects with the school division.
  √  Incorporated food nutrition specialist supervision and guidance in the cafeterias.
  √  Upgraded lab equipment at John I. Burton High School to emphasize the importance of student lab experiences.
  √  Increased number of dual enrollment students at John I. Burton High School.
  √  Established after-school remediation for at-risk students in mathematics at John I. Burton High School.
  √  Purchase of new walk-in freezer in cafeteria at john I. Burton high School.
  √  Purchased new band uniforms for Burton Raider Band.
  √  Addition of Career Coach to provide assistance for students in post-secondary educational and occupational opportunities.
  √  Increased communication by maximizing the use of the Norton City Schools webpage.
  √  Enhanced john I. Burton High School's computer network by incorporating a complete wireless infrastructure.
  √  Initiated online SOL testing of 6th and 7th grade social sciences and language arts.
  √  Continued improving the integration of technology through the addition of additional Smart Boards, video streaming in the
      classroom and staff development during faculty meetings within the division.
  √  Improved communication with stakeholders by the use of the Norton City Schools webpage as a source of notification to
      parents and as a source of recognition for student achievements.
